Castle Presents in Ireland

Dr. Kathy Castle, Department of Communication Studies' Director of Undergraduate Education, gave her presentation celebrating the Pearson Award for Innovation in Teaching with Technology, for the Association of Business Communication in Dublin, Ireland.

Communication Studies Kelly, Bonander, Hoerl and Graduate Student, Baker, Attend LGBTQ History Dinner

Drs. Casey Ryan Kelly, Allison Bonander, Kristen Hoerl and graduate student Jonathan Baker represented the Department of Communication Studies at the 15th annual LGBTQ History Dinner on October 19th. This was their largest event, celebrating 10 years of the LGBTQA+ Resource Center on UNL's campus. Awards went to State Senators Adam Morfeld and Patty Pansing Brooks for their work for inclusion, and PFLAG as the longest running LGBTQ support institution in Lincoln. The keynote speaker was Ryan Sallans, a trans advocate and UNL alumni. Pictured: Kelly, Bonander & Baker.

Blood Named Japp Scholar

The Department of Communication Studies congratulates doctoral candidate Adam Blood, named a Phyllis Japp Scholar. This fund is named for Dr. Phyllis Japp who was a member of our faculty from 1986-2009. The fund is generously supported by valued alumni, faculty, and the Japp family, including the Phyllis and Lyle Japp Endowment. In addition to his excellent scholarship and teaching, Adam Blood is the graduate student coach for UNL’s debate team, part of the Cornhusker Speech & Debate program, and a UNL Graduate Student Ambassador.

Dr. Denker Discusses Difficult Classroom Conversations

Dr. Kathy Denker of Ball State University visited UNL today to work with us and talk with our faculty, lecturers and GTAs about the topic of Difficult Classroom Conversations. Dr. Seiler Recognized for 45 Years of Dedicated Service to the University

Chancellor Ronnie Green recognized the university's 45 and 50 year employees on stage at his State of the University Address on September 19. Congratulations to Department of Communication Studies’ Dr. Bill Seiler on his 45 years of dedication and service to the university and our department. We recognize especially his outstanding teaching and 21 years as Department Chair.

Dr. Kelly Wins the 2017 Early Career Award

Congratulations to Dr. Casey Ryan Kelly, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, who has won the 2017 Early Career Award from the National Communication Association’s Rhetorical and Communication Theory Division. This award recognizes scholars who have a clear and impressive record of scholarly research and exhibit the potential to contribute significantly to the field. One of his nominators expressed: “In short, Casey Ryan Kelly has accomplished early in his career what many of us strive to finish across a longer time span. He is a superstar critic-theorist. He is eminently deserving.”

Doctoral Candidate Adam Blood kicked off Communication Studies' 17-18 Colloquium Series September 13. The presentation, titled Arguing About Threats to Loyalty in the Internet Age, featured a discussion on his work with Dr. Ron Lee on loyalty in the age of terror. 

Dr. Dawn O. Braithwaite Receives Samuel L. Becker Award

Dawn O. Braithwaite, Willa Cather Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, will be awarded the National Communication Association Samuel L. Becker Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes a lifetime of outstanding service to the Association and to the profession. The Award is presented to the person judged to have made the greatest contribution to the association and to the profession during her or his career in research, teaching, or service. In most cases, the individual selected will have made outstanding contributions in all three areas. Braithwaite was the President of the National Communication Association in 2010 and the Western States Communication Association in 2009.

Dr. Braithwaite’s nominator wrote, “Dr. Dawn O. Braithwaite is an ideal (if not, quintessentially the best) person for this award because of her exceptional service to NCA, her extensive number of service roles, and her ways of making a qualitative difference in the discipline. Her impressive record of service extends to multiple associations and goes in tandem with her scholarship and leadership in the profession. I believe she embodies the spirit and the values of this prestigious honor.”

Dr. Casey Kelly's "Abstinence Cinema"

Congratulations to Dr. Casey Ryan Kelly, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, joining the faculty in Fall 2017. His newest book, Abstinence Cinema (Rutgers University Press), has been included on the National Communication Association’s Bookshelf, offering profiles of new and notable books written by Communication scholars. Dr. Kelly's book won the National Communication Association Visual Communication Division’s 2016 Diane Hope Book of the Year Award.

British National Debate Team vs UNL Speech & Debate

Since 1922, the National Communication Association has sponsored international student exchange tours for the purpose of promoting debate, discussion, and intercultural communication. Renowned for their wit, humor, and eloquence, members of the United Kingdom’s English-Speaking Union tour the United States each year, debating the best and the brightest at our institutions of higher learning.

Julia Moore NCA Award

Dr. Julia Moore (PhD 2016), Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Utah, has won the National Communication Association’s Gerald Miller Dissertation Award. The association-wide Miller Dissertation Award was endowed in 1971 and honors top dissertations across the Communication discipline. Dr. Moore is the first UNL graduate to win this award (and we know more awards are in our future). The faculty in Communication Studies. her committee, and Dr. Moore’s Advisor, Dr. Dawn O. Braithwaite, are extremely proud of Julia and her work. Dr. Moore has also been named the winner of the National Communication Association Interpersonal Communication Divisional Dissertation Award as well.

Longtime Administrative Assistant is relay coordinator for Tractor Relay Across Nebraska

Communication Studies' longtime Administrative Assistant, Donelle Moormeier, is the relay coordinator for the Tractor Relay Across Nebraska (TRAN). Riders on antique tractors drive across the length of the state for ten days in June. This year, 25 tractors traveled across the state, visiting many communities and highlighting agriculture. In celebration of Nebraska’s 150th anniversary of statehood, Donelle organized a tractor drive around the Nebraska State Capitol on June 10. 152 antique tractors were driven around the capitol. Congrats to Donelle and the Nebraska Antique Farming Association.
