Welcome to our new assistant professor: José Ángel Maldonado!

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is delighted to announce that José Ángel Maldonado will join our faculty as an assistant professor in Fall 2017, focusing on Rhetoric of Identity and Difference. Coming out of the University of Utah program, Prof. Maldonado centers his work in Communication and Rhetorical Theory, Critical and Cultural Studies, Globalization and Neoliberalism, and Transnational Indigeneity, with a particular interest in Mexican Communication Studies. Welcome to Nebraska, Ángel!

University of Nebraska Speech team continues to impress

Congratulations to the Cornhusker Speech team for their 8th place finish in the nation at the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament. UNL has the significant accomplishments of placing in the top 10 for the 10th straight year and in the top 20 for 22nd straight year. Four Nebraska teams (UNL, UNO, Doane, and Hastings) were in the top 20, showing the important shared commitment to speech and debate in our state’s colleges and high schools.

The Department of Communication Studies is so proud of the student competitors who have been going to tournaments since September and preparing even longer. Congratulations to Director Dr. Aaron Duncan, Assistant Director Dr. Allison Bonander, and our wonderful coaches, Dr. Jon Carter and Dr. Amy Martinelli. Congratulations to Dr. Allison Bonander who won a select New Coach Award from the American Forensics Association.

The University of Nebraska Speech and Debate team showcased their abilities on March 8 to a crowded room of UNL faculty, students and staff. The presentations had the audience laughing and crying as they become thoroughly engrossed in the dramas presented by the students.

The Department of Communication Studies was honored to have Dr. Mohan J. Dutta, Provost's Chair, Professor and Head of the Department of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore (NUS) visit with us. He spoke to the department and the Qualitative and Mixed Methods Interest Group of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Consortium and the Minority Health Disparities Initiative on campus and shared his groundbreaking activist health communication research.

Cornhusker Speech & Debate hosted the inaugural Jack Kay Swing Tournament this past weekend here at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Jack was our Director of Forensics and then our Department Chair in Communication Studies. His legacy lives on at Nebraska and in all of his students, colleagues, friends, and of course family. Pictured at the awards ceremony, Dr. Aaron Duncan tells the assembled about Jack. We are also working to endow a Jack Kay Scholarship for a Speech & Debate in his honor. Jack Kay will always be a Husker in our hearts.
