University of Nebraska-Lincoln Communication Studies is very pleased to announce that Dr. Kristen Hoerl and Dr. Casey Ryan Kelly will be joining our faculty as Associate Professors in Rhetoric and Public Culture, starting August, 2017. Dr. Hoerl (PhD, University of Texas at Austin), and Dr. Kelly (PhD, University of Minnesota) are currently members of the faculty at Butler University. Welcome Kristen and Casey!

Cornhusker Speech & Debate hosted the inaugural Jack Kay Swing Tournament this past weekend

Cornhusker Speech & Debate hosted the inaugural Jack Kay Swing Tournament this past weekend here at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Jack was our Director of Forensics and then our Department Chair in Communication Studies. His legacy lives on at Nebraska and in all of his students, colleagues, friends, and of course family. Pictured at the awards ceremony, Dr. Aaron Duncan tells the assembled about Jack. We are also working to endow a Jack Kay Scholarship for a Speech & Debate in his honor. Jack Kay will always be a Husker in our hearts.

Congratulations to University of Nebraska-Lincoln Communication Studies Rhetoric and Public Culture doctoral students Nicole Allen, Chase Aunspach, Jon Carter, Will Cooney, Ashely Garcia, Jamie Downing, and Jen Rome whose proposals were accepted to the Midwest Winter Workshop held the University of Iowa on January 28th. Thanks to the hosts at Iowa and the rhetoric colleagues who came and shared their expertise. Great road trip!

Dr. Alllison Bonander Earned the National Outstanding New Coach Award

Congratulations to Dr. Allison Bonander, Associate Director of Nebraska's Speech & Debate team for earning the national Outstanding New Coach Award from American Forensic Association that will be presented at the national tournament this coming spring.

Communication Studies welcomed Professors Marianella Fernández and Luz Marina Vásquez from Universidad de Costa Rica

 
Dr. Chuck Braithwaite's, Costa Rican colleagues came to visit UNL to meet students and faculty and to experience the video class between Nebraska and Costa Rica from the U.S. side. Dr. Braithwaite visited Costa Rica at the start of  this longtime partnership. Professors Braithwaite, Fernández, and Vásquez explored ways to make their instructional partnership even more successful.Dr. Braithwaite is director of COMM 211 Intercultural Communication Global Classroom.
